Essay on Democracy
The word ‘Democracy’ originates from the Greek word dēmokratiā, in which demos means ‘people’ and Kratos means ‘rule.’ Therefore, the concise meaning of democracy is ‘rule of the people.’ Greece was the first country to implement a democratic form of government in the world. The most famous, simple, and convincing definition of ‘democracy’ was given by Abraham Lincon, the 16th president of the United States which says ‘Democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people‘. In modern times, this simple definition of democracy has been modified to include other ideologies like equality, rights of the citizens, political accountability, and values of freedom and justice. We can say that democracy is a form of government in which the people have the authority to participate in making the policy decision of the country. In other words, they have the right to choose their representatives to run the government. The opinion and will of the people are given priority in the democratic setup and equality and freedom of speech and press are the core of democracy. Not only political but democracy also has a social power and it implies no discrepancy based on caste, creed, and religion, or culture. The essence of democracy lies in the free exchange of ideas and every citizen in the country enjoys the same status in society concerning policies and law.
There are two types of the democratic system-one is direct democracy and the other is indirect democracy. In a direct democracy, all the citizens of the country gather in a public place to make policies, pass the budgets and elect officials, which of course is not suitable in the modern era because of the large population and complex lifestyle. In an indirect democracy, also known as a representative form of democracy, citizens elect their leaders who make policies and laws, pass the budget, and elect their officials. Today, the USA, France, England, and India have indirect democracy. India is the world’s largest parliamentary democratic republic where the Prime minister is head of the government and the President is head of the state. It has three governing bodies, viz., legislative, executive, and judiciary who are the policy and lawmakers as well as the executors. The UK also has a parliamentary system like India. On the other hand, the USA has a presidential system of democracy in which the President is the head of the country and the government. Norway and Iceland are considered the best democratic country in the world.
In an ideal condition, democracy may be considered a responsible and stronger form of government considering the welfare of all but it is not free from challenges and maladies. Some of the factors casting negative impacts on democracy are illiteracy, lack of civic sense, negligence, incompetence, and political instability. As it is based on electoral rivalry, democracy leads to corruption. Without education and awareness, democracy will degenerate into mobocracy.
