Overview

Diwali or Deepavali is also known as the Festival of Lights. It is one of the most important festivals among Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains. Diwali is celebrated over five days. As per the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated in the month of Ashwayuja and Kartika. People decorate their houses, offer prayer to goddess Lakshmi, prepare sweets, and exchange gifts. Families come together to celebrate the festival of Diwali.

Mythological significance

Diwali is a Hindu festival whose existence goes back to ancient mythological times. There are a few stories to support the existence of the festival of lights.

Story of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya

It is believed that on this day Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after an exile of 14 years. Rama defeated the evil king of Lanka – Ravana (Dashera), which marks the defeat of evil over good. On returning to Ayodhya, Lord Ram was welcomed by lighting up all the houses and streets with rows of clay lamps. That is why Diwali is also called ‘Deepavali’ which in Sanskrit means ‘row of clay lamps’.

Story of Lord Krishna

Where the story of Lord Rama is associated with the celebration of Diwali in Northern India, the Southern part of India celebrates it as the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon king Narakasura. Satyabhama granted a boon to Narakasura that his death should be celebrated with colorful lights. Thus, it is celebrated as ‘Naraka Chaturdashi’.

Story of Goddess Lakshmi

Goddess Lakshmi is believed to have been born on Diwali at the time of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Cosmic Ocean). People believe that on the day of Diwali goddess Lakshmi visits each house to bless her worshippers with tremendous prosperity and wealth.

How is Diwali celebrated?

The pre-Diwali time is a busy period for all. The main focus is to clear out unwanted stuff from the house and decorate it with great charm to attract Goddess Lakshmi. New jewelry and clothes are bought, and sweets and snacks are prepared and exchanged with family and friends.

Diwali is a five-day long festival where each day holds its own importance.

Day 1: Dhanteras

The first day of five days is celebrated as Dhanteras. It is considered auspicious to buy precious metals like gold and silver. Metallic kitchen items are also considered a sign of good luck. Lord Dhanvantri, the Lord of Ayurveda is worshipped on this day. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is offered a mix of coriander seeds and jaggery. Traditionally prepared ‘Lapsi’ is specifically prepared on the occasion of Dhanteras. 13 Diyas are lit and kept around the house for all five days to protect the house from negative energies.

Day 2: Choti Diwali

The second day of the festival is Choti Diwali. Geometrical and floral designs using multi-colored rice flour powder are made at the entrance of the house. Choti Diwali is also called Naraka Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas. Mahakali is worshipped on this day.

Day 3: Diwali

The third day is the main celebration of the Diwali festival. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped at the most auspicious time of the day. The entire family comes together and participates in Lakshmi Poojan. The full house lights up with multi-colored lights and earthen diyas that enhance the beauty of the house manifolds. Firecrackers are a thing mostly for children and young adults. A lavish dinner is planned to wind up the day.

Day 4: Govardhan Pooja

It is believed that on this day Lord Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Parvat on the little finger of his left hand for seven days to protect the people of Vrindavan from the torrential rain of the Rain God Indra. A miniature of Govardhan Parvat is prepared and worshipped. It is the new year in the state of Gujarat.

Day 5: Bhai Dooj

The final day of the five-day festival is celebrated as Bhai Dooj. This festival marks the loving bond between a brother and a sister. On this day sister perform aarti and apply a red tika on the brother’s forehead and pray for his good health and prosperity. In turn, her brother promises to take care of her for her entire life. A sumptuous meal is enjoyed and a gift is presented to the sister.

After effects of Diwali on the Environment

Though Diwali is the most awaited festival of the season, it has on major side effect. The bursting of crackers leads to alarming levels of air and noise pollution. This leads to respiratory issues. Several birds and animals choke to death because of air pollution.

Moreover, there have been several instances where child labor is associated with the manufacturing of crackers. This causes cancer in children.

Also, burning casualties are at their peak during this time of the year.

The Government has been taking steps from their end to curb these issues and encourage people to celebrate eco-friendly Diwali, but unless the realization comes from within this is going to be a point of concern with each passing year.

Conclusion

Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. It is that time of the year to burn out the grey desires and ill thoughts to give way to the bright and positive mind and soul. It’s the time to forgive and forget and proceed into the new year with a positive mental framework to embrace the upcoming year with compassion, empathy, and grace. Diwali is considered an auspicious time to start new endeavors among the business communities. Though Diwali is primarily an Indian festival, it is now celebrated across the globe because of the vast existence of Indians worldwide.
