Essay on Freedom Fighters for Students and Children

The 15th of August has long been recognised as India’s Independence Day and celebrated as such. To achieve this victory of freedom where Indians could live outside the rules of the British, numerous freedom warriors made great sacrifices. Without the contributions of well-known liberation fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Chandra Shekhar Azad, and others, our goal of independence would not have been attainable. Because of their efforts, our nation is currently free of British rule. Every citizen of the nation honours the nation’s independence fighters on this day.

Of all the freedom fighters, my favourite freedom fighter is Mahatma Gandhi. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is also known as the Father of the Nation. He was a social reformer and a freedom warrior who worked hard to free India from the hands of the British. Mahatma Gandhi was a notable public figure. His role in the social and political reform of India was very significant but instrumental. He helped Indian society get rid of social evils too. The first Gandhi Jayanti is observed on October 2nd to honour him, as the entire country is beholden to his efforts.

While many freedom fighters were choosing their own ways of fighting back against British rule and government, Gandhi led the path to freedom by following the principles of ahimsa, or non-violence. He became a famous international figure because of his simple way of exerting himself. He became the topic of discussion in many international media outlets.

Mahatma Gandhi did his studies abroad in Africa and learnt a lot from Nelson Mandela’s approach there, but came back to his own country to fight for the freedom India deserved. The Khadi Movement was part of the greatest movement, the “Non-co-operation Movement,” which encouraged the use of Indian goods and stopped the use of foreign goods. Following the Chauri-Chaura incident, he decided to leave the Non-Cooperation movement. This was owing to the Chauri Chaura incident’s brutality. As a result, many people were angered by this decision. Gandhi, on the other hand, was firm in his Ahimsa ideology.

Gandhi made yet another contribution: secularism. He held that no religion should have a monopoly on truth. Mahatma Gandhi promoted inter-religious friendship. Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to numerous societal issues cannot be overstated. During his detention in the Jail, where he fasted against the age-old scourge of ‘untouchability’ in society, he tremendously aided the community’s upliftment in the modern day. He also promoted education, hygiene, health, and equality in society.

Mahatma Gandhi was a major advocate of agriculture and encouraged people to work in agriculture. He encouraged Indians to engage in manual labour and advised them to gather all of their resources to live a simple life and become self-sufficient. He began weaving cotton clothing with Charkha to avoid using foreign goods and to promote the use of Swadeshi items among Indians.

Furthermore, Gandhi’s philosophy of sustainability is extremely relevant in modern India. This is due to India’s existing population density. Renewable energy and small-scale irrigation systems have been promoted. This was owing to Gandhiji’s generally pro-industrialisation efforts.

During the Indian Independence struggle, Gandhiji suffered and was imprisoned multiple times with his followers, but freedom for his country remained his primary desire. Even after being imprisoned, he never returned to the path of violence.

He died on January 30, 1948, and his body was cremated at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Every year on January 30th, India commemorates Martyr Day to pay tribute to him. The United Nations has paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The United Nations has designated October 2nd as the “International Day of Nonviolence.” In addition, many countries commemorate January 30th as International School Day of Nonviolence and Peace.

To conclude, Mahatma Gandhi was one of the greatest political figures of all time. Most notably, Indians honour him by referring to him as the “Father of the Nation.” His name will undoubtedly live on for future years.
