Holi is one of the most important festivals of the Hindus. It is the festival of colours that is enjoyed by all age groups. The day is filled with fun, food, colours, mischief and enjoyment. Though it is celebrated mostly in northern parts of India, over a period of time it has gained popularity and is celebrated worldwide wherever Indians have migrated.
Holi indicates the offset of winter and the onset of spring. As per the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on the full moon night of the month of Phalgun.
MYTHOLOGICAL STORIES ASSOCIATED WITH HOLI
There are two Mythological Stories supporting the origin of Holi. The first one is the story of Krishna and Radha and the second is about Prahlad and Holika.
The Story of Radha-Krishna
Lord Krishna is known for his playful and mischievous nature. As a child, he was very jealous of Radha’s fair complexion since he was very dark. Lord Krishna complained to his mother Yashoda about this injustice of nature. To pacify the young Krishna, Mother Yashoda proposed to go and colour Radha’s face with whichever colour he wanted. Krishna in his regular impish mood went ahead and coloured his beloved Radha’s face with colours, making her one like himself. This gained acceptance and later evolved as a full-fledged festival. This event is brought alive each year, particularly in areas like Mathura, Vrindavan, Banaras and Nandgaon which are closely associated with Radha and Krishna.
The Story of Prahlad and Holika
Prahlad was the son of King Hiranyakashyap and a sincere devotee of Lord Vishnu. The demon king Hiranyakashyap was an arrogant and tyrannical ruler. After receiving a special boon from lord Brahma he thought himself to be invincible. He decided to destroy Vishnu and banned his worship in his kingdom. But Prahlad turned out to be an ardent devotee of the Lord Vishnu. He tried everything to dissuade Prahlad from worshipping Lord Vishnu but nothing could sway Prahlad from his steadfast devotion.
Finally, he came to his sister Holika who had a boon to endure the fire. With a plan to burn Prahlad alive, she grabbed him and entered into a fierce, blazing fire. Shockingly, Holika was burned to ashes while Prahlad escaped unhurt. He continued to chant Lord Vishnu’s name and sing hymns in his praise.
This symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Every year fire is burnt on the eve of Holi to burn out the evil, ego, jealousy and all the negative traits and purify the soul.

HOLI CELEBRATION
The next day of Holika Dahan is Dhuleti when early in the morning people play with colours. They spray coloured water on each other and apply gulal of various colours. Children carry water guns (Pichlari) and coloured water-filled balloons and play with each other. The celebration is accompanied by songs and dance which make the colourful atmosphere even more joyful.
