Essay on Coronavirus
Viruses have lived on the Earth for millions of years. They are neither dead nor alive, they are active inside a living thing. Coronaviruses are a group of interrelated viruses that causes disease in mammals and birds. It causes respiratory tract infections in humans that can either be very mild or lethal. Covid-19 is the newly identified coronavirus caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Novel Coronavirus (nCoV) Origin
The first case was discovered in Wuhan, China. A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain not previously known to humans. Coronaviruses cause diseases in mammals and birds but now it has started circulating within humans. It said that covid-19 originated in bats and ultimately entered the human body.
How does it circulate among humans and who are at enormous threat?
All coronavirus have crown-like spikes on their surfaces called s-protein and houses a core of genetic material. It is a highly infectious disease. Any virus that enters the body looks for cells with a receptor. Once they enter the right cell they make replicas or copies of themselves. Covid-19 affects the body very differently. Most of the people infected with the virus experience mild to moderate illness and recover with generally prescribed medications at home. However, people with pre-medical conditions like diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, cancer, cardiovascular issues, hypertension, and many more are more prone to get infected by the virus as compared to people with the non-medical condition and require hospitalization. Elderly people are most likely to be affected by this deadly virus.
How does the coronavirus attack our body?
Coronavirus enters our body through the mouth, nose, or eye. It then attaches itself to the throat airways and ultimately the lungs. It can multiply very fast and turn into the factories of viruses.
Common Corona Symptoms
COVID-19 affects different people in different ways, However the common signs are fever, cough, breathlessness, or severe body pain. The virus damages the smooth lining of the blood vessels and initiates clotting. There are small sacs from where oxygen goes into the blood. If they get inflamed, it can lead to pneumonia. Seriously ill patients need to be given oxygen as the lungs are filled with infected fluid debris. Covid-19 doesn’t just affect the lungs. It can disrupt the entire immune system. The average life of the virus is 14 days but severely affected patients take months to recover. So, it’s very important to take all the necessary health guards.
How does covid-19 virus spreads ?
The covid-19 virus spreads mainly in people who are in close contact with each other. It spreads most easily in crowded places because as a person infected with the Covid-19 virus breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes liquid droplets enter into the air. One can catch the virus if these droplets come into contact with their eyes, nose, hands, or mouth.
How much damage is caused by the virus?
This virus from China has already killed 5.2 million people worldwide and at least 257 million people have been infected. This figure shows the severity of this virus.
Corona Virus Vaccine
Though in the coming time it is expected to be muted. Surely it will continue to infect but it will be comparatively less deadly. There are a couple of factors to support this. Vaccines – These jabs are our best weapons to shield ourselves from this deadly virus. 4.4 Billion people have received their first dose of vaccine and 3.56 Billion people have received their second dose. 7 vaccines have already been approved and 5 others are awaiting regulatory approval. Around 1.5 Billion doses of the virus are produced every month and it is only expected to increase. This will help spread the web and break the link between the virus and death.
Omicron SARS-CoV-2 Variant
On 26th October 2021, WHO named Omicron one of the latest variants of coronavirus. Omicron is a big question now. They won’t be that effective but they won’t be ineffective either. With the development of the Pharma Industry vaccine for omicron is expected to come into the market by early 2022. The Polio vaccine took 20 years from the early trial to its first licensing, we have surely come a long way. Adar Poonawala, CEO, Serum Institute of India has said “WE WOULD NEED ONE TO TWO BOOSTER SHOTS EVERY YEAR FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS,” Decade later we are likely to be as immune to this virus as a common cold. In the meanwhile, continuous vaccine shots will be necessary.
A lot of the population has already been infected by the virus. So the combination of vaccination and infection will help repel the infection to a great extent.
It is advisable to maintain social distancing, regularly wash hands, wear masks and be alert!
