Essay on how to overcome the fear of maths

Mathematics or simply maths plays an indispensable role in our lives. Some may hate it some may love it but nobody can do without it. Although the concepts of numbers, quantities, and time are closely associated with our daily activities, still it is a nightmare for some students. The reason behind this is not the subject itself but the method and the fear of the subject that is induced into the minds of young children that act as a hindrance in learning and understanding this subject. Often, students develop math anxiety when they are expected to learn higher mathematical concepts without acquiring basic math skills.

Teachers and parents both play an important role in removing this math phobia from the minds of young students. Here are a few tips to achieve this:

  • Parents, as well as teachers, should be patient and they should not scold the child if he or she is facing difficulty in understanding the subject or in solving math problems. Rather, they should explain the topic repeatedly till the concept is clear to them and the child gains confidence. This will decrease their anxiety and fear.
  • The subject should be taught in an exciting and creative manner by bringing little fun into the subject. This can be done by introducing activities like puzzle solving, playing cards, and playing games involving numbers and counting. Not only will this remove the fear of maths but will also develop creativity in young children.
  • One of the most effective steps is to make the student solve the math problems regularly and repeatedly. The student should not be pressurised to solve lots of problems in a day but moderation is the key to developing a positive attitude towards maths in the child. For example, 10-15 minutes of problem-solving a day for a month is far better than 2-hours for 3-days in terms of output.
  • Students should be given practical examples that are connected with day-to-day activities to make them understand a concept. The teacher should explain to them how the basic mathematical tools such as fractions, decimals, areas, percentages, statistics, etc. are related to daily life problems whereas topics like mensuration, algebra, trigonometry, calculus are required for higher studies in science, commerce, physics, etc.
  • In maths, there are generally, multiple ways to solve any problem. Rather than forcing children to follow set instructions let them explore their way to find the solution. This will inculcate the ability to think and will develop the “growth mindset” which, in turn, will remove the fear and anxiety of math from young minds.

So, we conclude that math is not just about doing calculations and solving textbook problems, it is a way of life. The child should be taught the concepts through a “why behind what” approach rather than making them memorise formulae and steps without understanding the fundamentals. Thus, with the right guidance and approach, students can be made to fall in love with the magic of math.
