In order to remain physically and mentally fit, sports play an essential role. As perfect education is necessary to develop an ideal mind, sports are also required to create an ideal body. We can treat sports as a crucial part of our life. India has given birth to many sportspersons, including the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Milkha Singh, also known as “The Flying Sikh,” and the “Hockey Wizard” Dhyan Chand, like superstars in the male category. Mary Kom, Mithali Raj, Sania Mirza, Sania Nehwal, PT Usha, etc., are highly significant in the female category.

As we all know, the game of India’s national sport is Hockey. And the birth commemoration of the luminary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand is commended as the National sports day in India, i.e., on 29th August. Dhyan Chand made the country shine. He has won three Olympic medals in 1928,1932 and 1936. This era is referred to as the Golden Era of Indian Hockey, and the significant role is played by none other than Dhyan Chand, who scored 33 goals in mere 12 matches. He has achieved nearly 1000+ goals in his career that ranges from 1926-1948, with about 400 goals on an international level. That is the reason why he is known as “Hockey Wizard.”
He was an expert in dribbling skills. For his brilliant ball controlling skill, he was once suspected by official coaches. They broke his hockey stick in the field to check whether any magnet was there are not. To be the Indian hockey team captain, in 1936, he gave other players a tough Competition in the berlin Olympic games.

In order to praise and salute the late legendary of Hockey for his great achievements, govt. of India has tributed him with the National sports day on his birth anniversary since 2012. On this day, the dignitaries of India, like the president, honour the best performers of Hockey. The awards like the National sports award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award nowadays known as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award, Arjuna award, and Dronacharya award. Moreover, to praise him more, the Indian govt. has also retitled the National arena of Delhi as Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. In 1956, he was also felicitated with the Padma Bhushan award.
On this day, the need and importance of sports in our lives are highlighted. The knowledge of the ways by which sports keep us fit is emphasized. Also, the spirits which brighten the National flag and make the country feel proud are felicitated.
