We should find ways to recycle this waste artificially, reduce the amount of it, educate the people about its disastrous consequences, otherwise our life is ultimately going to be screwed. Therefore, it is high time that we should manage our waste responsibly. The most effective principle to achieve this goal is known as the three R’s i.e., reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reducing, reusing, and recycling waste helps to reduce the amount of waste we discard which thereby helps to conserve natural resources, non-renewable energy.
In India, today plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental challenges. In the present scenario, 56 lakh tonnes of trash are accumulated every year i.e., more than 9000 tonnes of plastic every day. No place from sea to rivers, mountains to empty plains, is exempted from throwing plastic waste by people who are insensitive towards its harmful effect on our environment. So, today if we follow these three Principles of 3R’s i.e., Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle properly then it can play an important role in plastic waste management.
Reducing simply means creating less waste. In general, ‘reduce’ refers to the reduction of wasteful, harmful, and non-recyclable materials. Plastic bags produce a large amount of waste — and you must know that plastic bags take hundreds of years to decompose. Therefore, to manage plastic, the first principle is to Reduce. First of all, we should drastically decrease the production of plastic. Even if we manufacture it, we can reduce its usage by simply buying products in bulk; for example- instead of buying two-three bottles of an item in a month, we can buy a large bottle of that product. By doing this, the plastic and the packaging material used in other bottles will also be saved, thereby reducing plastic waste to a great extent. Thus, if we use plastic wisely and carefully, we can reduce its harmful effect.
The second Principle to manage plastic waste is Reuse. Reusing means the repeated use of things or their parts that still have usable features. Instead of using disposable poly bags, you should pack your lunch in a lunchbox which even if made of plastic can be reused so many times. Today, instead of discarding plastic, we can change it creatively and reuse it. For example, instead of throwing away the empty plastic boxes, we can use them by planting flowers in the gardens. We can also give the plastic items that are no more used by us to someone else who may use it. This will reduce the production of new plastic which will be helpful in the proper management of plastic waste.
To manage plastic, the third principle is recycling. Recycling plastic waste materials helps to conserve the finite resources of the earth like natural gas, coal, petroleum, wood, and water.
We should, therefore, use cloth, paper, and jute bags to replace plastic bags. So, now the time has come that we should take steps towards making our earth clean and healthy by eliminating plastic waste from our planet. If the 3R tools are used positively by everyone, we can make our world a better living place.
