Home schooling vs public school

Home schooling vs public school Sample 1

Let’s quote the views of two famous Nobel laureates- Albert Einstein has said, “Education is not the learning of the facts, but the training of the mind to think” and Rabindranath Tagore believed that self-realisation is the goal of education. Nevertheless, both of them emphasise that education plays a pivotal role in shaping one’s life and future. As their toddlers attain school-going age, parents are baffled with the decision of choosing a perfect education system for their child. The choice between homeschooling and public school is not always easy as both have their pros and cons.

Homeschooling typically refers to educating the child at home, led by the parents, on the other hand, a public school has fixed timings and fixed curriculum, and the responsibility to impart education lies mainly on teachers. Let’s now elaborate on the pros and cons of homeschooling and public school.

Advantages of home schooling:

In ancient days, a child was used to studying at home only by parents or designated tutors. As society developed, public schools aided by government or private funds came into existence in which, several teachers used to teach students in groups or classes following a well-defined curriculum. Although most parents have opted for public schools, some parents still preferred homeschooling. Homeschooling has the benefit of one-on-one teaching so that learning is tailor-made and student-paced for a particular student. Unlike in a class of 40 t0 60 students, a child gets personal attention and guidance and learns according to his or her grasping capacity.  This system offers the flexibility of timings as well as curriculum. Last, but not least it strengthens the parent-child bond too.

Disadvantages of home schooling:

The disadvantages of homeschooling include a lack of structure, discipline, resources, and socialisation opportunities. In a home setup, it is difficult to provide certain facilities to students such as a library, computer lab, practical lab, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Due to the absence of trained and expert teachers in all subjects, the quality of education suffers, and parents are overburdened too. Arranging for every facility in their own capacity is expensive too.

Advantages of public school:

Public school has a built-in structure, provisions for sports, extracurricular activities, library facilities, and a well-researched curriculum for a particular grade.  The teachers are well qualified and trained. One of the biggest advantages is the opportunity for socialization. Parents are also less involved and can have spare time for their professional and individual growth. This system is by far cheaper too.

Disadvantages of public school:

The downsides to public school include a rigorous schedule and lack of personal attention to a child due to many students being in the classroom. Secondly, peer pressure sometimes harms the personality development and self-esteem of the child.

Thus we can conclude that there is no absolute model that fits everywhere and depending upon individual circumstances, parents should decide which system to opt for their child.
