Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is the full name of Gandhi. He was born on 2nd October, 1869 at Porbandar, Gujarat.His father worked as Diwan in the zamindari system. On his birth anniversary there is a national holiday in the country in offices, institutions and schools and also this day is observed as International Non-violence day across the world .He completed his study of law from England and then in 1893 he went to South Africa to save Indian rights and also fought there against the government for human rights.
He returned to India in 1915 and joined Indian National Congress to fight for liberation of India from British rule.He is a national popular leader and known as the father of the nation. He is a man of great personality and his heart is full of patriotism.He is a well known lawyer and has great knowledge. He played a major role in the independence of India and was popular for his beliefs and great personality around the world.
Gandhi ji strongly believe and follow the policy of satyagraha, the truth and ahimsa, Non- violence. He fights against British rule on the basis of these beliefs only and they are his main weapons and he wanted freedom from the British without violence.Many political leaders and freedom fighters were against his Non- violence policy and opposed him . Gandhi ji but with his great ability of leadership united the country of people against the British power and made people to believe in him.
His role in social and political reform was instrumental. He rid the society from various social evils and played a major role in the upliftment of lower sections of the society and started fasting against this social evil of untouchability, therefore well known among them and they blindly followed him in his struggle. He also put forward the model of sustainability and said that each person should consume according to his needs and stop over using resources.
This is very important in India as India has a very high population and less resources accordingly. So there has been promotion of renewable energy and small- scale irrigation systems and to promote these ideas he started campaigns against excessive industrial development. Secularism is another idea he spread among the people and tries to connect people on the basis of friendship rather than religion.
Gandhiji started various popular movements against the British government like Non cooperation, Quit India , Salt March , Khilafat movement etc and went to jail for several times. He had great courage and popularity to deal with these problems.

He started the non cooperation movement on 1 August 1920, it was later meant to be the Civil disobedience movement and also the largest movement of that time. In this movement people were encouraged to not to support the government and with respect to the same many people boycotted their titles, government elections by not participating, schools , colleges ,etc.
The main reason behind this disobedience was the monopoly of the British government over salt and Indians had to buy it from the British and had to pay heavy tax. Therefore Gandhi started the Dandi March also known as salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930 and ended it on 6 April 1930. This march was a strong inauguration for the civil disobedience movement and inspired more people to follow Gandhi in the movement.
Also one of the final straws that gave India its independence was the Quit India movement which was started on 8th August 1942 during the second world war by Gandhiji and Indian National Congress. This movement demanded the complete end of British rule from India. Although the movement itself was unsuccessful, it made the British government feel that its power and autonomy had now declined in India and they had to quit one day.
Gandhiji was really a great freedom fighter and struggled very much for Indian independence and went to prison for several times.He was assassinated at age of 78 on 30 January 1948 in Birla House, New Delhi by Nathuram Vinayak Godse as he believed that Gandhi did injustice with the Muslims during partition. His great contribution made him always remembered in the minds of people and the history of Indian Independence .
