Raksha Bandhan is one of the important traditional Hindu Festival. It glorifies the beautiful bond of brothers and sisters. Raksha Bandhan is also called ‘Kajri Purnima’ or ‘Rakhi Purnima’. It falls on the full moon day in the auspicious month of ‘Shravan’ as per the Hindu calendar. The festival is celebrated with great zeal all over India, irrespective of cultures and communities. It is the essence of siblings’ bond that has overpowered cultural boundaries.

Rakhi is the symbol of trust and love that both the sister and the brother cherishes forever. On this day, the sister observes a fast since the morning. All are decked up in beautiful Indian traditional attire. At the auspicious time, the sister lights up the lamp, applies a tika on her brother’s forehead and finally ties a Rakhi on his right wrist.

Rakhi is usually a thread decorated with multi-coloured beads and satin laces. After tying the rakhi this beautiful bond is sealed with the sister’s prayers for a long and prosperous life for her brother and in turn, the brother promises to protect and take care of her forever. Lastly, sweets and gifts are exchanged.

Like several other Hindu festivals, Raksha Bandhan has deep-rooted mythological significance. From Mahabharata, it is evident that when Lord Krishna cut his figure in a fight sequence with the evil king Shishupal, Draupadi tore off a part of her saree and tied it to his finger to stop the bleeding. Krishna was very touched by this sisterly act and promised Draupadi that he will always be there for her in her time of need.

The preparations for this unique festival start almost a week in advance. The local markets are full of rakhi vendors. Colourful satin threads are seen hanging all over the market. It is the peak season for some of the shopkeepers whose sole business is making and selling rakhi. Every year they come up with new variety and extraordinary designs making the selection procedure even more difficult.
