The education system plays a very important role in shaping the future of students. We are born at home and our parents become our first teachers, but what follows next leaves a great impact on us and has a major hand in shaping our future. The education system becomes part of our lives at the very early age of four or five, and we are bound to it for more than fifteen-twenty years. It makes us obliged to shape ourselves into what it is making us. Our education system knocked on our doors with a tight curriculum built on the built-in syllabus, a particular way of writing, reading, and so on to be followed. This restriction to be the same as every student has shaped the lives of students in prisons where they are reminded now and then to be that one person, the perfect definition of an idle student.
Every year, when students enter a new session, they are accompanied by labelled books, which are registered under the curriculum and have to be followed with a strict syllabus to be grasped throughout the year. This syllabus was also built long ago under consideration and brings only small changes to it every year or maybe no changes at all. The old curriculum indeed leaves no room for imagination and creativity. Even in a subject like English, where your thoughts aren’t restricted to theorems or formulas, you are given a particular way of writing to fetch marks. The whole curriculum is about scoring the best, and this kills creativity at an immense level because we are cuffed to being ‘students’ in the way the curriculum wants.
When we say we are “students”, it means we are learning things we are not familiar with, be it a skill, manner, lifestyle or any important physics theorem. It is rightly said that everyone is a student throughout their life as they encounter new things as they grow old. The student is supposed to have an open mind, an open space where they can grasp any thoughts and allow them to swim through their imagination. It is why when kids are at a young age many parents enrol them in different extracurricular activities like dance, music or drawing. It gives space to the brain and allows the thoughts, and imagination to float, which results in the display of creativity. While this is what is restricted in schools and our curriculum, it is high time we deal with it. The way things are taught in school in India must be revised and put in a way where it is a more thoughtful approach for every individual.
