Why female education is important essay

There is a famous saying “If you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a girl, you educate the whole nation.” This age-old saying still holds good in its true spirit. It is high time when society should broaden its conservative mentality towards girls’ education. This typical mindset is a hindrance to the progress of many countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and others. Gone are the days when people believed that educating females is a waste of money and resources because their utility is only for housework, marriage, and childbirth. The people are, however, realising the importance of female education for the social, economic, and diversified growth of any nation.

With the awareness that comes with education, women can take more of a leadership role in policy decisions, thereby reducing infant and maternal mortality, and eliminating the ill effects of child marriage. They can become an asset for their family and also for the whole society. It is a fact that a mother is the first teacher of her child. If the mother is well-educated then she can take proper care of their children and also play an important role in shaping the future of her children. The economy of a country grows faster if more and more women become financially independent which can substantially reduce poverty. The financially strong women have self-confidence and awareness towards their rights and so they can raise their voice against the ill-treatment and atrocities such as female infanticide, dowry, harassment by the male-dominated society, etc.

Napoleon had once said – “The progress of a country is impossible without qualified and educated mothers and if half of the people of my country are not educated, then half of them will remain illiterate.” Thus, an uneven ratio of educated boys and girls will degrade the overall educational level and stagnate the development of society. Moreover, in modern times due to the rising inflation, it becomes difficult to meet the requirements of a middle-class family. The financial contribution of the females of a family can raise the living standard of the family substantially. Also, if unfortunately, a woman’s husband dies she can earn on her own by doing a job or business and lead a dignified and independent life without being a burden on other family members.

So, we conclude that women should be given equal opportunities in education like men and they should not be deprived of their right to education. An appropriate awareness program is essential for educating girls across the nation, especially in rural areas. In the present scenario “BETI BACHAO, BETI PADHAO” is a welcome initiative taken by our present government in the field of girls’ education. Our government is also providing free education, free study materials, mid-day meals, and other facilities to facilitate and encourage female education. Still according to the latest report around 15% of girls drop out at the national level. Therefore more steps need to be taken on the family front too.
